Winter Sports

A Huge Thank You to all of those who attended the Winter Sports Information Night on November 16.

Sign-ups for Winter Sports is now being accepted for Girl's Volleyball (5th-8th) and for Boy's Basketball (5th-6th). Sign-ups will be closed on December 1. Practices begin on December 5.

Needed for Registration:

  1. Medical Release/Permission to Travel Form
  2. $50
  3. Code of Ethics (if this is the first season of participation for this year.)

Coaches Needed

We are currently searching for qualified coaches at for teams in Volleyball and Basketball at the 5th and 6th grade level. We are projecting a record number of student-athletes participating in the Winter Athletic Program and are working to create enough teams to accomodate the needs. If you are interested or no someone who would be interested, please contact Mr. Maxwell @ dmaxwell@stpaulsorg.org. The following positions are needed for the upcoming season:
  • 5th Grade Basketball
  • 6th Grade Volleyball
  • 6th Grade Volleyball

D II Panthers Claim Championship!

Congratulations to the Division II Boy’s Flag Football Team as they defeated Trinity 15-12 today for the LOCAL Championship. Way to go Mr. Gugel and the Mighty Panthers! Just wait and see what Mr. Gugel has agreed to do…

Uniform Collection

The following schedule will be followed in collecting the uniforms from the Fall season:

  • Wednesday, November 1 -- Girl's Varsity BB
  • Tuesday, November 7 -- Varsity and JV Football
  • Wednesday, November 8 -- Girl's JV, 5th, 6th BB
  • Thursday, November 9 -- 5th and 6th Grade Football

All collections are during lunch. Student-athletes not returning a uniform on time will serve a lunch detention until the uniform is collected. A student-athlete may also not participate in a Winter sport until the uniform is accounted for.

Winter Sports Starting

On Tuesday, November 7, the 7th and 8th grade girls will begin the flag football season. This season lasts three weeks that culminates in a tournament (@ St. Paul's) the week of November 28. Girls who are interested must bring the $10 fee and the Medical Release form (supplied to all girls in class) on or before the first practice.

The boys in 7th and 8th grade will begin the basketball season on Tuesday. The first week will be evaluations to determine who will be playing on the Divsion I (varsity) team and who will be playing on either the Division II or Division III teams. Boys who are interested must bring the $50 fee and the Medical Release form (supplied to all boys in class) on or before the first practice.

A Medical Release form is available on Edline under "Panther Athletics".

LOCAL Championships

The Varsity Flag Football Team and the JV Flag Football Team each won their first round playoff game vs. St. John's. The Varsity will travel to Salem today to take on the Spartans for the Division I LOCAL Championship Game. The JV will host Trinity Lutheran in a showdown for the Division II Local Championship. See you on the fields!

Lady Panthers Take 3rd Place

Lauren hit four free throws in the closing minutes to push the Lady Panthers over the top in the third place game at the Salem Invitational. The third place panthers fought hard to take the win (41-36) and finish out a successful tournament run. Allie and Kaylie were named to the All-Tourney team! Congratulations Ladies!

Lady Panthers Fall to Zion

The Lady Panthers fell to Zion on Friday night at the Salem Invitational by a score of 43-18. The team started out well and then went flat as Zion advances to the Championship Game versus the winner of the Salem/St. John's game. St. Paul's will play the loser of that game for third place at 10:00 AM. We hope to see you there!

Lady Panthers Advance

The Lady Panthers got off to a 25-0 start against Abiding Savior in the Salem Invitational Thursday night to earn a spot in the semifinals versus the winner of the Zion/Salem B game. That game will take place in the Salem gym at 6:30 PM on Friday night. Come out and support the Lady Panthers.

Fall Athletic Information

Be sure to go to Edline and click on Panther Athletics for current information. If you missed the Parent Meeting on August 17, you will find the PowerPoint presentation from Mr. Maxwell that overviews our program.

Fall Athletic Season Opens

The Fall Athletic Season will open for 5th-8th grade flag football (boys) and for 7th and 8th grade basketball (girls) on Wednesday, August 23 and Friday, August 25. Practice will begin at 8:00 AM and end at 11:00 AM each day.

Plan ahead for arriving in the morning as there is major street construction in process on Heim directly in front of the school. You may have to park at the church and walk down.

Football players must have a mouthguard and are encouraged to have football cleats. Basketball players should have a good court shoe.

All players should be in PE clothes and should bring his or her own water. Detailed schedules will be available once the league schedules have been released.

Christian Sportsmanship Award and Student-Athlete Award


Four 8th grade student-athletes were recognized for their outstanding participation in the Panther Athletic program as determined by the coaching staff and the faculty.

Christian Sportsmanship



The Lutheran Orange County Athletic League has named St. Paul's the winner of the 2005-2006 Christian Sportsmanship Award. (League President, Chris Weinrich presents the award at the May 12 Sport's Assembly)

St. Paul's is very excited with the receipt of this prestigous award. It is by far, the most valuable affirmation of our coaches, staff, student-athletes, fans, and parents!

Orange County Championships

The following students ran at the Orange County Championships this past weekend at Trabuco Hills:

  • Matthew Gest -- 3rd place in the 100 meter and 200 meter races
  • Mikaela Truckey -- 1st place in the 100 meter and 2nd place in the 200 meter
  • Alyssa Belczak -- 4th in the 200 meter and 5th in the 400 meter
  • Josh Mattoon -- 5th in Long Jump
  • Claire Masterson -- 2nd in High Jump and 5th in Long Jump
  • Zachary Crain -- 1st in the 400
They each qualify to go on to additional championship races on June 4 in Long Beach. Watch for details.

This Week in Sports (May 8)

Here is the schedule for this week:
  • Tuesday -- St. Paul's Relay Meet @ Concordia University, Irvine
    • Student-athletes will dismiss @ 2:35 to leave at 2:45. The meet begins at 4 and should be complete by 6.
  • Wednesday -- Track Practice
  • Thursday -- Track Practice
  • Saturday -- LOCAL Track Meet @ Brea Olinda High School
    • Meet begins at about 8:00 AM and continues until about 3:00 PM

Boy's Volleyball

On Saturday, April 8, the 7th and 8th grade boy's teams took to the hardwood at Lutheran High. The JV team posted some exciting wins in the morning to advance to bracket play. After fighting hard they were knocked out of the tourney. The Varsity team advanced unbeated through pool play to the bracket play and were seeded #2. After defeating Christ, Brea, they faced a tough St. John's team and lost. They then defeated the St. John's JV team easily to win the third place trophy. Congratulations to all of the boys on a successful tournament!

Girl's Flag Football

Zion Lutheran of Anaheim defeated Christ Lutheran of Brea in the 2nd annual GFF Tournament (1st held at St. Paul's) by a score of 22-14 on Tuesday, April 11. On Wednesday, the 7th grade girls took on the 8th grade girls in front of hundreds of fans (the middle school and some lower grades). On this gorgeous afternoon, the 7th grade girls posted a 20-6 win. Congratulations to all of the girls on an outstanding "season"!
