Fall Athletics

St. Paul’s Lutheran School believes and expects its student-athletes to emulate Jesus Christ in every thing they do, including how they compete.  Their sportsmanship and gamesmanship should flow from the principles of “Christmanship”.  The practical aspects of “Christmanship” are attained by competing in the image of Jesus Christ.  St. Paul’s believes that parents, coaches and the athletic director have the responsibility to develop this concept in the student-athlete.
The Fall Athletic Programs are winding down and we are in the process of preparing for playoffs and ending a very successful 2005 season.  Our Fall program has been made up of 140+ student-athletes who filled the rosters of nine teams (five football teams and four basketball teams).  As we prepare for the Winter season, we are anticipating record numbers of student-athletes participating in the Athletic program.  Eight basketball teams and five volleyball will be competing in the Lutheran Orange County Athletic League. (LOCAL)
At the end of Matthew chapter 5 in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says, “Go ye therefore and be perfect, even as your heavenly Father is perfect!”  Jesus does not say, “Go ye therefore and be mediocre.”  Now, while none of us will ever achieve perfection on this earth (and indeed we have a Savior who has redeemed us from our lack of perfection!), we are commanded by our Lord to pursue Excellence in Life!  We are to pursue excellence at home, in school, and yes, even on the court/field!  We are to dedicate ourselves to our Lord and all He has commanded us.  In athletics, this means to commit ourselves to the RELENTLESS PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE.
As our student-athletes continue to represent Jesus, St. Paul’s, You, and themselves, we seek your support in three ways.  First, in prayer:  take time to lift up the student-athletes, coaches, referees and spectators in your daily prayers.  Second, we would love to have you attend one or more of the games and cheer on the Panthers.  Finally, consider making a financial gift to the Panther Athletic Program.
All of game schedules are posted on the St. Paul’s website: http://www.stpaulsorg.org/sports.htm .  You can also find updates and stories at www.pantherathletics.blogspot.com.
In Christ,
Mr. Deryl Maxwell
Athletic Director

Panther Pride

Christian Sportsmanship is a key component to the Panther Athletic Program and yesterday I had the opportunity to share this message with the boys in the football program. I will have the same presentation with our girl's in the basketball program today. Here are some of the highlights:
  • St. Paul’s will be the “class” of the league.
  • When you step on the field, you represent self, all people of St. Paul’s (including that member who may have never stepped foot on campus), and, most importantly, Christ.
  • Sportsmanship will be a top priority.
    • Examples of how this can be displayed:
      • Support the officials. Do not show disrespect. Tell them “Good Game” at the conclusion. Tell them “Good Call” when appropriate.
      • Hand the ball to the official. (Don’t just throw it down after a score. Chase down loose balls and return it to the official)
      • When a flag is pulled, hold it up and be recognized (or drop it and be recognized). Once recognized, pick it up and hand it back to the player.
      • Recognize good plays from our opponents. They are not our enemy. This is not a war!)
      • We support our teammates at all times, no matter the situation!
      • Show enthusiasm for the game and for the players on the field/court.
      • Play Hard! Play Fair! Nobody Gets Hurt! (Obviously in athletics injuries are going to occur. But they will not occur due to playing unfair.) No Cheap Shots!
Thanks for supporting our players and our program!

6th Grade Fights Hard in Loss

We spotted Salem two touchdowns with a kickoff return and a punt return. We didn't do anything in the first half offensively. But.... the second half was all St.Paul's. Our defense held Salem scoreless in the second half, with two interceptions by Nate; one for a safety. We scored twice in the third quarter, one being a touchdown pass to Nate, and Andrew ran for another. After our defense held on a goal line stance, we got the ball back with 45 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter. We advanced the ball to mid-field when time ran out. Final score: Salem 18 St. Paul's 14

JV Football Wins

Last week the JV Football team was led by solid defense to score a 14-0 win over St. John's.

I want to congratulate all of those student-athletes who have participated in our "Summer Workouts" these past couple of weeks. All of our teams are off to a great start and I know that we are going to have a great Fall season.

A couple of reminders:
  • All Forms and Fees must be submitted by Friday in order for student-athletes to participate. We are sorting through all of the paperwork this weekend and some of you will be recieving some documents back to initial or sign. Please do so and return ASAP.
  • The Athletic Handbooks are complete and they will be sent home this week.
  • Girl's 5-6 Basketball begins on Wednesday after school. Practice ends at 4:30. The girls will be recieving information in their classrooms Monday or Tuesday.
  • All boys must have mouthguards in order to particiapte!
  • 7-8 Football will begin practicing on the Canal Field on September 6.
  • Watch for information about a "Rock Walk". We need to pick up rocks on the Canal Field to make it safe for our teams.
  • All teams should be finalized by the end of the week (September 2)
I want to thank two dads who stepped up to take the 6th grade football team; Mr. Brister and Mr. Lilland.
